5 Ways to Check for Trafficking

The following is a list of known indicators that some sort of human trafficking is occurring. If you or anyone you know witnesses any of these situations or something otherwise suspicious, please call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at (888) 373-7888.

Anyone, especially those who feel at-risk, can also text “HELP” or “INFO” to 233733.

5. Branding

A tattoo, carving, or burn on a victim indicates ownership by a trafficker/pimp/gang. These can be difficult to discern from a regular tattoo, but trust your gut. Making the call means you would rather be safe than sorry.

4. Lost Looks

Any victim of this crime is likely to look lost and confused when outside. Sending a non-verbal cry for help is sometimes all these victims can do to let you know something is wrong.

3. Extraordinary Security

Ridiculous security measures for homes or even businesses can be a strong sign of human trafficking. Guards or even too many cameras for comfort should tip you off.

2. Young Women with Older Men

A consensual couple can be easy to read. Women in these situations often look distressed, especially when around the man keeping them. Again, better safe than sorry. Nothing would be worse than seeing that young woman on your news headline the following night.

1. Multiple People Coming and Going

Any business or residence with multiple different people or cars arriving and leaving can indicate some sort of dangerous activity, even if not human trafficking. Calling the hotline is the best way to rule this out.

Safety

For your own safety, never approach the situation. Local police forces have been diligent in working with the hotline operators. They will intercept and investigate the situation from there.
